In My Language Launches
We have recently launched In My Language (IML). This is an 11 language website with a broad range of information useful to new Canadians and those trying to help them.
One of the first things people notice when they visit the site is that the content is very similar to Settlement.Org. That is because Settlement.Org was the basis for a vast majority of the content we translated. But IML is more than just Settlement.Org in 11 languages.
This new site has a focus on getting information to people in as many ways as possible, including offline.
A success for this site is if a settlement worker prints out 10 copies of an article and hands them out during a workshop.
Other scenarios we encourage are:
- ethnic media use text from our site as the basis for their newspaper articles
- companies/agencies that see many newcomers (ie walk-in clinic) hand out relevant content in languages used by their clients
- recent immigrants use the site to help their relatives and friends who are getting ready to come to Ontario or have recently arrived
- newcomers use the site for themselves getting the information they need in the language they want
We have tried to make it as easy as possible to use the content on In My Language in a number of ways. The copyright is very open and allows users to copy and edit the content so that it fits their needs. Of course, the idea is that the facts stay intact.
We also created a tool that allows users to customize content by adding an organization’s logo, adding notes and more to an article. Then you can save and print the modified article.
In My Language has many other features and tools that can be found by signing up for an account. So log in and check out this great new site.
